Currency: Córdobas. Occasionally some people refer to the currency like "peso" instead of córdoba.
Conversion of foreign currency to córdobas: This can be done through the majority of the Banks and Hotels in the capital. Most of the banks have branches in other cities where this transaction can also be done. It is preferable to change American dollars, due to the reason that any other currency isn’t negotiated as easily. To consult the official exchange rate you can visit the web page of the Central Bank of Nicaragua: http://www.bcn.gob.ni/.
Traveling checks: If the checks are in American currency they can be changed in the majority of the banks with a commission charge.
Credit Cards: Visa, Master Card, American Express are accepted in numerous establishments.
Shopping: When visiting Nicaragua you should make a space in your luggage for the beautiful handicrafts, hammocks, sculptured pieces, memorable articles our country offers. Don’t forget to visit our artisan markets: Roberto Huembes and the Market of Masaya.
Sales tax and Tips: The only tax a tourist pays is a state tax known as IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado) of 15%. Tipping varies between 10% and 15 % of the service value. In the hotels and airport a tip of USD $0.50 is reasonable for each piece of luggage.
